mr. lonely

I saw Mr. Lonely at the IFC center on Friday night - I'd been waiting for it ever since I saw the trailer. The film follows two parallel storylines - one about a Michael Jackson impersonator (Diego Luna) who meets a Marilyn Monroe impersonator (Samantha Morton, who I love because of Sweet & Lowdown) and goes with her from Paris to the commune of impersonators that she is a part of in Scotland. The other storyline features Werner Herzog as some sort of priest who finds himself in the company of some supernatural nuns. Werner Herzog is really funny in it, if you like his brand of weirdness.
Besides being aesthetically beautiful, I really loved all the characters, especially Michael. I loved that he has all these surface qualities that are Michael Jackson's - the clothes, dancing, hair, chin cleft -but they never penetrate any deeper than that. It was like he needed someone to hide behind, but he didn't truly want to be someone else.
It was definitely the least depressing Harmony Korine movie by far; it was sad but in a nice way? I guess you could call it mellower, but I liked it better than anything else he's ever done.
So, if you're looking for a movie to see, you might like this one better than this or this. or you might not. depends on who you are.
* this is interesting - IMDB's recommendations at the bottom of the page include Wonder Boys, one of my favorite movies in the world.
i just watched that too. it is shot very near where i am from, it reminded me so much of home. the people are weirder there though. i am also related to most of them.
